Technical Questions

What is a monocoupling?

Monocouplings allow the quick and safe connection or disconnection of a single line.

A mono coupling consists of two elements; the coupling and the nipple. Frequently, the two parts are referred to as "male and female", "mother and father part" or "socket and plug" because of their plug principle.

What does nominal diameter mean?

The nominal diameter is the diameter of a circular surface in place as a minimum throughout the flow line of the fitting.

What is a multicoupling?

Multicouplings enable the quick, safe and simultaneous connection or disconnection of several fluidic and electrical lines by manual, pneumatic or hydraulic force. They are used wherever several lines (cable bundles) must be coupled.

Due to the fixed arrangement of the coupling elements, connection mistakes can be ruled out and the duration of the coupling process is greatly shortened. Multicouplings are used where automated operating procedures during manufacturing, testing, actuating and controlling are requested.

What is a docking system?

Docking systems are automatically actuated multi-couplings, enabling the simultaneous and automatic connection or disconnection of several fluidic and electrical lines pneumatically, hydraulically or electrically.

What is a tool changer?

A tool changer consists of a robot-side mounted half and usually several halves each mounted on one robot tool.

The robot tools are parked in parking stations and picked up by the robot as required.

A robot thus becomes a working system with a variety of different tools as all the required media, forms of energy and control signals can be transmitted from the robot to the various tools by the tool change system.

Such a WALTHER tool change system can be specifically configured according to individual customer requirements due to its modular design and offers application options for automated production lines (e.g. automotive industry).

With the "WASI 2" safety switch developed by WALTHER, the WALTHER tool changing system achieves the highest possible level of safety, "Performance Level "e".

Which sealing materials are used?

Primarily, elastomers are mainly used due to their reversible features in dynamic and static applications. In special application cases, thermoplastics and/or metallic seals are used, too.

In which temperature area can quick coupling systems be used?

WALTHER quick couplings cover a temperature range from – 253 °C up to + 800 °C, depending on material combination and construction type.

Where can I find performance charts and flow coefficients for fittings?

You can find the performance charts with factor Cv values (flow coefficients) in the technical catalogue at the end of each series chapter and in the series brochures.

What documented production does WALTHER offer?

  • DIN EN ISO 10204 (certificate 3.1) up to the batch documentation of individual parts
  • EN 10204
  • upon consultation...

Which test methods does WALTHER use?

  • Each coupling is 100% tested before shipping for seal tightness and function!
  • Our test facility features a wide range of testing options, for example:
    - Helium leak detector
    - Climatic test chamber
    - External pressure testing devices
    - Internal pressure test benches
    - Leak test stands (including vacuum)
    - Connection cycle test systems
    - Flow test benches
    - Dynamic load test stand
  • We will gladly test according to customer specifications also as part of a joint acceptance with our customers.

Which pressure types do we classify?

The flow pressure is the working pressure which is generated when the valves/slides are open, i.e. when the medium flows. This must be differentiated from static working pressure, which is read by a manometer in front of a closed valve/slide. The flow pressure is always lower than the static working pressure.

What does media pressure mean?

The media pressure is the internal pressure generated by a flowing or static medium in a fitting.

What is the Kv value / Cv value?

The Kv or Cv value is a flow coefficient indicating the flow volume per time unit in relation to the expected pressure drop of a pipe system. The KV value is the equivalent of the American Cv value, transferred to European controlling units. Cv = 1.167 x Kv
